The youngest female World Gymnastics champion on a single piece of
apparatus is Romania's Daniela Silivas (b. May 9, 1971) who was 14-years
185-days old when she won the gold medal on the balance beam on November
10, 1985 in Montreal, Canada.
Silivas was inspired to take up gymnastics by the Romanian
gymnastics star, Nadia Comaneci. As a youngster she made rapid progress,
winning her first local championship in 1980, the Romanian Junior
Gymnastics Championships in 1982, and her first international junior
title in 1983. Silivas retired in 1990 and moved to the USA in 1992.
