County Timiş is shares the Banat region with County
Caraş-Severin to the south, and borders County Hunedoara to the
east, County Arad in the Crişana region, and to the
northwest, Hungary's Csongrád County.
The Vojvodina Autonomous Province's North Banat District and Central
Banat District border to the west and south, parts of Serbia.
County Timiş is also part of the
Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa euroregion.
With an area of 8,697 km˛ (making up almost 4% of all Romania), County
Timiş is the largest county in Romania. In the eastern extremity are the
Poiana Ruscăi Mountains from the Southern Carpathians group. Elevations
decrease to the west, passing through the Lipova Hills to the Western
Romanian Plain, the eastern part of the Pannonian Plain.
The county is crossed by many rivers, the most important being the
Bega River and the Timiş River.
Demographics
Like almost all counties in Romania, the population in Timiş is slowly
declining. In 2000, it had a population of 684,506 and in 2004,
659,512, with a population density was 75.8/km˛.
The county's population is diverse and is made up of mostly of
Romanians (83%), although being a border county with Hungary, Hungarians
make up 7.5%, Germans - 2%, Serbs - 2%, Rroma - 2%, Banat Bulgarians and
Ukrainians under 1%.
Economy
Timiş County has one of the most dynamic economies in Romania, being a
region with among the highest ratings of foreign investment due to its
tradition and its position.
The predominant industries in the county include mechanical
manufacturing, food, chemicals, food, textiles, electronic components, and
wood products.

Vechi and Remetea Mare, with Ianova being a notable village.

Dialling County Timiş
All of the phone numbers in the county, including
the main city of
Timişoara with
(256) or (356), depending on whether
the service is through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or
from one of the newer entrants into the market in Romania.
Dialling into anywhere in County
Timiş, you must
remove any leading zero from the county code portion of the phone
number, so that (0256) becomes (256). Dialling a mobile
number (Vodaphone, Zapp, Orange, Cosmote, etc), you do the same, dropping the zero from the (07XX) part of
the number, to make it (7XX). Both landlines and mobiles
have 6 digits following the initial county code.
