Tepid Tecuci
It may take a while to warm to Tecuci, and the best advice is to do as
the locals do!

newspaper for specials and events at local hotels and clubs
Things to See
-
The Cathedral in the centre of town is the pride of Tecucians, as is
the park around the same area.
-
Tecuci is also home to the Calistrat Hogas National College.
-
The Summer Theatre offers a few distractions during the warmer
months.
-
Renovations are planned for the Crang Park, and a lottery winner
donated to the local council to add waterfalls and walkways to a popular
downtown park.
-
The ''Gheorghe Petrascu'' Art Gallery showcases local and regional
art, and the Tecuci Museum has a reasonable selection of local artifacts.
-
Don't miss some beautiful wine country, which stretches from Tecuci
to Galaţi.
- Mitu beckons me out back, wants to give me a tour. The yard is full of
animals: sarcastic geese, nervous turkeys, ducks, cats, skinny dogs,
gossiping pigeons, and dozens of hens.
- A huge wooden barrel squats near a fence, stained purple from grapes.
It looks like a giant plum. An ancient bathtub sits nearby, encrusted with
grey cement. In a small outhouse, Mitu proudly shows me a big wicker
basket full of big brown eggs.
- Anna makes a superb lunch of
deep-fried
sheep's cheese, fried eggs,
mămăligă corn
porridge, succulent home-grown tomatoes, spicy pickles and crusty bread.
She serves it on their terrace, under a canopy of vines.
- The sun dapples our plates as we eat. Birdsong echoes through high
trees all around. It's rural bliss, like sitting in the
Garden of Eden. Mitu pours big glasses of
purple wine, boasting how he had a good vintage last year.

Early Tecuci
The vicinity of Tecuci was the scene of a fierce battle in 1476 between
Ştefan cel Mare and the Ottomans.
Being on the Bârlaud river, Tecuci was along a
major trade route for those travelling north to the Neamţ region, with the
area just north of Tecuci making a batter crossing point than the lower
marshlands to the south.
Tecuci in the Kingdom
Ioana Maria Valentina Lambrino, born to the north of Tecuci in Roman,
was the wife of King Carol II, and sought refuge in Tecuci with her
mother at the outbreak of the first world war. She was often seen in
her fine automobile -- not a common sight in 1916 Tecuci -- making outings
to the surrounding countryside.
Unfortunately for her, the war somewhat followed her, with the air
force training school being moved to Tecuci soon after the outbreak.
In 1928 famed flyer and sportsman Alex Papana joined
the Tecuci Flying School and was granted the pilot license number 703 of
17th August 1928.
The military aviation school survived through world war II and into
Communist times as an extension of the Cotroceni flying school.
