Romania's
Danube Port
On the banks of the Danube near the confluence of the Prut, Siret, and
Danube rivers, Galaţi is only outranked by
Constanţa as Romania's biggest port.
At about 325,000 inhabitants, it is Romania's 7th largest city.
Galaţi has a fine 17th century Eastern Orthodox cathedral - St. George
(Sfântu Gheorghe), and another particularly striking fortified church
(that of St. Mary - Sf. Precista) on the banks of the Danube (legend has
it that a tunnel was dug from the church and under the river).
Other features of the city include a sculpture park, a botanical
garden, several museums, a television tower opened to the public and
offering full view of the city, the newly-restored Galaţi Opera House, and
a promenade of several kilometres along the banks of the Danube (huge
sculptures are placed on either side of the road).
Being at the convergence of 3 major rivers, 3
countries, and 3 regions of Romania, Galaţi is a
bit of a transportation hub.

Cathedral, Gardens, Museums and More!
The Museum
Infiintat in anul 1956 (Muzeul de Stiintele Naturii) s-a organizat pe
baze stiintifice, incepand din 1959. In colectiile sale, este relevata
Valorificarea
culturala si stiintifica s-a facut prin expozitia permanenta, expozitii
temporare, sesiuni de comunicari, simpozioane si publicatii.
COMPLEXUL MUZEAL DE STIINTELE NATURII DE LA DUNAREA DE JOS face parte
The Contemporary Art Museum
opere, muzeul a fost instalat in cladirea monumentala a fostului Palat
Episcopal, inaugurata la 8 septembrie 1901, monument de arhitectura.
O data cu mutarea in noul sediu, muzeul si-a schimbat si profilul,
devenind muzeu de arta moderna si contemporana. In primavara lui 1973 s-a
titulatura in Muzeul de Arta Vizuala.
Just 2km north of Galati on the Tirighina hills and conveniently
located across from the Barbosi rail station. The Roman Castle
was built by the Romans as an outpost to defend their Lower Moesia
province against the tribes to the north. It had an important
economic and social role with two legions and two auxiliary units.
Around the castle you can see the remains of a rich community complete
with funerary remains as well as some great Roman sculptures commemorating
their campaigns in the lower Danube region.
Siretului, in apropiere de varsarea acestuia in Dunare. Locul domina
The Forest Zoo
A further 12km north of the city centre is the Gârboavele Forest Zoo,
part of the Natural Science Museum complex and the Botanic Gardens.
The zoo offers exotic animals from Rhesus monkeis and spiny anteaters to
lions, Siberian tigers, and various other carnivores and herbivores, birds
and the mandatory ponies for the kids. Open Tues - Sat, 10am - 6pm.
Further out is a horse ranch at Tuluceşti, used in
a few movies and offering rides.
Ships Ahoy!
If you enjoy ships and shipping, you'll delight in the kilometres of
docks and shipyards along the river, along with Romania's largest steel
mill.
The second week in August is Navy Day in Galaţi,
when some of the greatest and latest are paraded past the crowds, with
most of Romania's Navy floating by.

Galaţi has a university, the Universitatea Dunărea de Jos (Lower Danube
University), founded in 1948 and given university status in 1974, and a
teacher-training college as well as a host of other educational and
cultural institutions.
Among these, the Vasile Alecsandri and Mihail Kogălniceanu National
Colleges - ranks as the first pre-university level educational institution
in Galaţi and the country.
Economy
The city has the largest iron and steel plant in Romania the Mittal
Steel Galaţi, state-owned until 2001. It is still commonly referred to
under the old name Sidex. Also, the country's largest shipyard is found
here, profiting from the good access Galaţi has to the Black Sea through
the Danube and the short distance between its facilities and the Mittal
Plant.

What is in a Name?
|
Ottoman Galaţi
On the banks of the Danube around 1820
|

|
|
|
The name of the city appears to have derived from Cuman galat, which
was borrowed from Arabic qal'at (fortress).
There have been other etymologies suggested, such as Serbian galac,
but the galat root also appears in nearby toponyms, some of which show
clearly a Cuman origin, for example Gălăţui Lake, which has the typical
Cuman -ui suffix for "water". A derivation from Galatia (Gaul), suggesting
a Celtic origin, is possible, but unlikely.
The first mention of the city dates from 1445. In 1789, during the
Russo-Turkish War, Galaţi was burnt down by the forces of Russian general
Mikhail Kamensky.
A peasant revolt occurred in and around the city in 1907, being
crushed with assistance from the Romanian Army.
